Multiple police agencies in South Monterey County responded Monday night after a chase on northbound Highway 101 ended with an officer shooting an allegedly armed suspect. The chase ended near Soledad city limits.A press release from the King City Police Department says it started with an armed robbery in the area of First Street between Lonoak Road and Division Street in King City. Three victims were asked by an "adult male Hispanic" who exited a vehicle to hand over all of their personal items. Greenfield police spotted a vehicle matching the description and started a chase on north Highway 101. Greenfield police let King City police take over the chase once they caught up.Then, a spike strip was laid out on north Highway 101 near Soledad. The vehicle stopped before going over it, and a suspect got out of the car and started shooting at King City police, according to the press release. It goes on to say officers returned fire and struck the suspect."Upon yielding, the adult Hispanic male exited the vehicle from the passenger side with a firearm in his hand and fired at officers. Officers from the King City Police Department returned fire striking the suspect," the release read. King City police said the suspect is expected to survive. The names of the officers who opened fire have not been released. The number of shots they fired or how many rounds hit the suspect is unknown at this time as well. A woman, who was also in the car with the alleged gunmen, surrendered. No officer was hit. Police say the suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.Northbound Highway 101 was closed just south of Soledad as police investigated the incident, but the highway has since been reopened.King City police told KSBW 8 that they cannot comment on the investigation and that all questions must be directed to the Monterey County District Attorney's Office, which is standard for shootings that involve officers.
