A hard lump near your anus might be caused by a few different problems. Sometimes, an abscess (a pocket of pus) can form when an infection occurs near the anal area. Other times, it might be a pilonidal cyst, which is a skin cyst that can become hard and painful. Hemorrhoids, which are swollen blood vessels around the anus, can also feel like lumps if they harden over time.
