欧博Have Chalk Paints to Upgrade Your Projects and D

We picked Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Paint as our top recommendation thanks to its excellent coverage—you’ll often need only one coat—smooth finish, versatility, and ability to be distressed for an aged appearance. But if you need chalk paint for an exterior project, we recommend Country Chic Paint All-In-One Decor Paint. This clay-based paint holds up to the elements and still provides a stunning matte finish.

What to Look for in a Chalk Paint The Right Finish for Your Project

Chalk paint, by definition, has a matte finish. Our overall best pick, Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Paint, is without shine, though you can add a topcoat for a bit of added gloss.

“Chalk paint differs from traditional paints primarily in its texture and finish. It has a soft, matte look that dries to a chalky feel, perfect for creating a vintage or shabby-chic style," Josh Qian, contractor, COO, and co-founder of Bestonlinecabinets, tells us.

One exception to the highly matte finish is Annie Sloan Wall Paint. Formulated specifically for use on walls, the paint dries to a slight shine, similar to an eggshell finish, which makes it more durable and able to stand up to periodic washing and scrubbing than a completely matte surface.

Which Surface It Works Best On

One of the qualities that makes chalk paint a DIY favorite is that it can be used on many different surfaces.

“It works exceptionally well on porous materials such as wood, unsealed drywall, and terracotta, which allow the paint to grip effectively," Qian says. He notes, however, that additional preparation is necessary on slick surfaces like glass or metal to ensure proper adhesion. In such cases, a light sanding or a primer may be required.

While many chalk paints can be used on canvas or other fabrics, Chalky Chicks Premium Chalk Style Paint is particularly good for this purpose. Once watered down, you can treat it like a dye to color upholstery, fabric, and even leather items.

How Easy It Is to Apply

Along with its versatility, another chalk paint quality loved by DIYers is how easy it is to use. Often, you’ll have little to no prep work, although you should always clean the surface to be painted thoroughly before even picking up your brush.

While paintbrushes are the most common tool used to apply chalk paint, they aren’t your only choice. Some chalk paints, including Dixie Bell Chalk Mineral Paint, can be thinned with water and then sprayed on with a paint sprayer.

You can use a roller if you want more of a textured finish. There are also chalk paints that come in a spray can for the ultimate pick-up-and-go application—one that we especially like is Rust-Oleum Chalked Spray Paint.

The Amount of Coverage It Has

Because chalk paint is used for so many DIY projects ranging from painting a picture frame to painting kitchen cabinets, many brands offer their paints in a range of container sizes. For example, Renaissance Retique It Furniture & Cabinet Paint comes in a 16-ounce container that can cover up to 50 square feet—around the size of a small dresser or two end tables—or in a 32-ounce container that can cover up to 100 square feet, which is roughly enough to paint a large dresser or a table and set of chairs.

Does It Dry Quickly?

As a general rule, chalk paints dry quickly. Jolie Paint Matte Finish is dry to the touch in a mere 15 minutes, although it can take up to 45 minutes before it is dry enough to handle. More often, these paints are dry to the touch within 30 minutes or so, and are ready for a second coat or to be distressed within an hour.

The Range of Colors

Most chalk paint brands offer a wide selection of colors, usually including soft neutrals, grays, blues, greens, and some brighter hues of red or yellow.

“Look for paints with rich pigment and a wide color range to suit your project needs. Some brands also provide sample sizes that are perfect for testing colors and finishes before committing to a full can," Qian recommends.

One brand that takes color selection to the maximum is Behr. While their Premium Chalk Decorative Paint is available off the shelf in 46 colors, it can also be custom-tinted to over 500 hues if you don’t find exactly what you are looking for.
