One of the qualities that makes chalk paint a DIY favorite is that it can be used on many different surfaces.

“It works exceptionally well on porous materials such as wood, unsealed drywall, and terracotta, which allow the paint to grip effectively," Qian says. He notes, however, that additional preparation is necessary on slick surfaces like glass or metal to ensure proper adhesion. In such cases, a light sanding or a primer may be required.

How Easy It Is to Apply
