First Steps for Access: HSC NetID Setup & Tech Start Hub Entry
Welcome to the MD Program at the UNM Health Sciences Center!
This page will guide you through the steps to activate or recover access to your HSC NetID—your key to email, Microsoft 365, and the systems you'll use every day.
💡 Already have access?
If your HSC NetID is already working and you can successfully log in at hscid.health.unm.edu, you can skip this setup guide and go straight to the:
👉 Tech Start Hub for UNM Medical Students
This guide is intended for incoming medical students who need help setting up or regaining access to their HSC NetID account.
✅ Before You Begin
Make sure you have the following ready before starting your HSC NetID setup:
A laptop or desktop computer – Setup steps may not work properly on a phone or tablet.
15–20 minutes of uninterrupted time to complete the process.
Your Welcome Packet – This includes your HSC email and temporary password.
A smartphone or other smart device – You’ll use this to install and activate the Microsoft Authenticator app for MFA.
Step 1: Open a Private Browser Window
Before logging in, open a private browsing window to make sure you’re starting with a clean session. This prevents issues with cached logins or saved sessions from other accounts.
Here’s how to open a private window in your browser:
Google Chrome: Click the three dots (⋮) in the top-right corner → New Incognito Window
Microsoft Edge: Click the three dots (⋯) in the top-right corner → New InPrivate Window
Mozilla Firefox: Click the three lines (☰) in the top-right corner → New Private Window
Safari: Click File in the top menu → New Private Window
You’ll know you’re in private mode if your browser has a dark theme or shows a private browsing icon.
Step 2: Go to the HSC Identity Portal
In the private browser window you just opened, type or paste the following web address into the address bar:
hscid.health.unm.edu
This is where you’ll log in with your HSC credentials and begin setting up your account.
If the page doesn’t load or you see an error:
Confirm you are using a new private browser window.
Try a different browser (Chrome or Firefox work best).
Try clearing your browser cache.
If it still won’t load, restart your computer and try again.
Step 3: Log In with Your HSC NetID
At the login screen, enter your HSC email address from your Welcome Packet. It should look like this:
yourHSCNetID@salud.unm.edu
When prompted for your password:
If you’re a first-time user or your password was recently reset, refer to your Welcome Packet for details.
If you’ve used your HSC account before, try your most recent HSC password.
If you’re unsure or forgot your password, please skip ahead to Step 7: Need Help? for support options.
Still having trouble logging in?
Double-check for any typos in your email address or password.
If prompted to choose an account, select “Use another account.”
Try closing your private browser window and starting fresh.
If your account gets locked, wait 15 minutes before trying again.
🚨 If you’re still stuck, jump to Step 7: Need Help? for tech support from our AMS team.
Step 4: Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
To protect your account, HSC requires Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). We recommend using the Microsoft Authenticator app—it’s easy to use day-to-day and works over Wi-Fi, which is especially helpful in buildings with limited cell service. You can always add a backup method like text messaging later.
If you've already set up MFA before, complete the sign-in prompt and skip to Step 5: Change Your Password (if needed).
If this is your first time setting up MFA, follow these steps:
On your computer, click Next when you see the "More information required" message.
On your phone, open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android) and search for Microsoft Authenticator.
Install and open the app.
Tap + Add account → choose Work or school account → then tap Scan QR code.
Back on your computer, click Next until you see a QR code.
Use your phone to scan the QR code.
When prompted, approve the test notification on your phone to complete setup.
Enter the verification code shown on your screen into the app and follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.
🔧 Having trouble with MFA setup?
If the QR code disappears or errors out, click Back → Next to reload it.
If the app doesn’t prompt you, check that notifications are allowed for Microsoft Authenticator in your phone’s settings.
If you’re stuck on “More information required,” try closing the browser completely and reopening it in a new private window before signing in again.
If you’re prompted to choose an account, select “Use another account” and re-enter your HSC email.
🚨 Still stuck? Jump to Step 7: Need Help? to contact our support team—we’re happy to help.
Step 5: Change Your Password (if needed)
If you need to change your password, now is the time to do it.
If your current password is working and doesn’t need to be updated, you can skip ahead to Step 6: Access the Tech Start Hub.
To change your password:
Go to the HSC Identity Portal.
Log in with your HSC email address and current password.
Select the option to Manage Passwords and follow the on-screen instructions.
Step 6: Access the Tech Start Hub
Now that your HSC NetID is set up and secured, your next step is to visit the Tech Start Hub for UNM Medical Students. This site includes everything you need to get started with Outlook email setup, BYOD device enrollment, and more.
💡 Tip: You’ll only be able to access the page if you’re signed in with your HSC credentials.
If you see a message asking you to request access, you’re probably signed in with a different account—such as your UNM NetID. To fix this, copy the Tech Start Hub link and open it in a private browser window, then sign in with your HSC email.
✅ Once you’ve reached the Tech Start Hub, you’re all set! Feel free to explore the tools and resources, or reach out if you need help.
