欧博百家乐How To Play Badminton
Do you want to learn how to play badminton?
It’s great that you are here because this page is designed to tell you the basics of badminton. Badminton is not hard to learn at all (although it’s hard to master like other interesting sports). Most importantly, badminton is fun to play.
How to play badminton, in one sentence? The goal of badminton is to hit the shuttle over the net and make the shuttle land in an area that is not considered out of bounds.
A rally starts with a serve
Each rally (a rally is like a possession for basketball) starts with a serve. During a serve, the player who serves should hit the shuttle and make it land in an area that is not considered out of bounds (more on boundary lines later).
Different ways to hit the shuttleHow you hit the shuttle is a big part of the game. You can hit it hard and you can hit it soft. You can hit it overhead and you can hit it underhand. You can hit it forehand and you can hit it backhand. When to use which shot and where to make the shuttle land is a big part of what makes the sport so exciting.
How to move on a badminton courtAnother big part of the game is your footwork. Instead of walking or running forward, backward, right, and left, you usually shuffle your feet to move yourself around the badminton court. Shuffling to the right side is like touching and pushing the ground with your left foot, then right foot, then left foot, then right foot in a bouncy way. (Shuffling to the left side is like touching and pushing the ground with your right foot, then left foot, then right foot, then left foot in a bouncy way.) Sometimes, you do run or walk when playing badminton, but in general, you shuffle.
How to score in badminton? To score in badminton, one of the following three things has to happen:
You hit the shuttle and the shuttle lands on an area that is considered in bounds
You hit the shuttle, then your opponent hits the shuttle but your opponent fails to make the shuttle land in an area that considered in bounds
Your opponent has a fault (e.g.: Your opponent violets the service rules during a serve) (To learn more about badminton rules, you can check out the badminton rules here.)
How to win a badminton match?A badminton match is a best-of-three-game series, meaning whichever team wins two games wins the badminton match.
In other words, a badminton match consists of two or three badminton games.
In each badminton game, whichever team scores 21 points wins a game. There is a deuce (kind of like an overtime in basketball) if the score reaches 20 to 20.
You can learn about the details of badminton’s scoring system here.
Badminton playing area for singles and doublesA badminton match can be a men’s singles match, a women’s singles match, a men’s doubles match, a women’s doubles match, or a mixed doubles match.
The image below shows the playing area for singles and doubles matches. Note that, for doubles matches, the back boundary line is different from the service back boundary line.
You don’t need a lot of badminton equipment to start playing badminton.
Should you buy badminton rackets and badminton shoes as an absolute beginner? While there is no one right answer to the question, I will answer it in a way that should work for most beginners.
Regarding badminton shoes, I don’t think you will need badminton shoes as an absolute beginner. A good pair of running shoes should be good enough.
Regarding badminton rackets, if you have good friends who have different rackets and who are willing to let you try playing badminton with the rackets, go ahead and borrow from your friends. See which racket is the type of racket that you feel comfortable playing with and buy the same one or a similar one.
On the other hand, if you don’t have a friend that you can borrow badminton rackets from, you can buy a non-expensive, even balanced, light weight, light tension racket to start with.
When you become a better badminton player, it’s a common thing to use a different racket.
Forehand and backhandThe “big circle” part of the racket is called the racket head. The racket head has two faces. The two faces are basically the same. The two most fundamental ways to hold a badminton racket is called the forehand grip and the backhand grip.
“Forehand face” is the face that hits the shuttle when you are using the forehand grip. “Backhand face” is the face that hits the shuttle when you are using the backhand grip.
Let’s now hit the badminton shuttle for the first timeNow, let’s say you got a badminton shuttle and a badminton racket. Let’s try to hit the shuttle with the racket a few times.
Use the forehand grip and hit the shuttle upwards. Wait for the shuttle to come down to roughly waist level and hit it upwards again with the forehand face of the racket. Keep doing that for a few times and get a feel of what hitting the shuttle is like.
Now, do the same time with the backhand face of the racket. Of course, you should be using the backhand grip. Get a feel of what it’s like hitting the shuttle backhand.
If you are comfortable with the above mentioned exercises, then you can try to mix them up. Try hitting the shuttle upwards using forehand grip. Then, while the shuttle is still up in the air, change your grip into the backhand grip and hit the shuttle with the backhand face as the shuttle gets down to roughly your waist level. Then go back to forehand, then backhand, etc.
Now, imagine there is a net in front of you, try serving using the forehand. Then try serving with your backhand.
If you have the space to practice the overhead shot. Try doing that a few times. You can just use the forehand in this case. Using the backhand to hit overhead shots is more advanced.
Play with your friendsNow, you are ready to play with your friends. Not everyone can be a professional badminton player, but everyone can have fun playing badminton with friends.
What’s next?Once you get better and better at badminton, you will want to acquire different badminton techniques. Watching a lot of badminton matches and copying the moves of professional badminton players is a great way to learn. Most importantly, play a lot!
