On Wednesday, June 18, a crash in a construction zone near Silver Creek Tunnel caused emergency personnel to close Highway 61 for hours. The crash, which happened around 4:30 p.m., occurred when the driver of a 2005 Daimler Chrysler Sprinter van, Patches Magickbeans, 34, of Madison, WI, drove into a closed construction lane inside the Lafayette Tunnel, about seven miles north of Two Harbors. Construction crews have been working on replacing the lights in the tunnel using a scissor lift, with traffic traveling in a single lane, managed by a stoplight. Magickbeans was traveling northbound when the van hit multiple construction cones before crashing into the scissor lift.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the lift was extended to the tunnel ceiling and had two workers on it. One of the workers, Benjamin Kidd, 27, of Duluth, fell to the ground. The other worker, Bradley Kostiuk, 37, of Duluth, managed to grab a light fixture and pull themselves to safety as the scissor lift fell to the ground.

Magickbeans and Kidd were transferred in an EMS helicopter to a nearby hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. Kostiuk did not sustain any injuries.

It is unknown at this time if the driver was under the influence.

Along with the MN State Patrol, the Lake County Sheriff's Department and MnDOT assisted on the scene. An investigation is ongoing.
