Be willing to travel to pick up your new dog. Adoption programs for retired K9 dogs don’t deliver. This means that you’ll need to go to them. Once all the necessary paperwork has been finalized, the program directors will give you a time and date when you can come bring your new dog home. Make it a point to arrive on time and with everything you need.

Don’t forget to factor rest stops into the estimated length of your commute if you’re traveling a great distance.

Make sure you have a leash, collar, and crate or kennel of the appropriate size with you when you show up. Without these things, you may not be permitted to leave the premises with the dog.

Help familiarize your dog with its new home. Have a bed and food and water dishes set up for your dog when you arrive. Give your dog a few minutes to freely explore its surroundings. It may be confused or anxious at first, so its best to let it wander on its own instead of forcing it to follow you or remain in a certain area.

Be sure to put up or unplug any potentially hazardous objects ahead of time.

You might also leave a few toys out for younger dogs.

A trained K9 will know to use the bathroom outside, so there should be no need to put down pads or other potty training materials. Still, it's a good idea to take it out as soon as you get home, even if its gone recently.

Walk your dog at least twice a day. Once you've welcomed your new dog home, get in the habit of giving it some regular exercise. Retired police dogs are used to being active on the job and tend to have lots of energy. If possible, take your dog out at the same time each day to help it establish a new routine.

Your ability and willingness to walk your dog frequently is often one of the items mentioned in an adoption program’s reality checklist or application guidelines.

Spend some quality time with your dog each day. Along with regular walks, try to devote at least half an hour a day to giving your dog a little one-on-one attention. You could throw a ball around, explore new areas of your home together, or just scratch its belly lovingly. The most important thing is that you share healthy interaction, especially after you first bring it home.

Tip: Being affectionate with your new companion will show it that you care for it and help you form a stronger bond in a shorter period of time.

Follow any additional instructions given to you by the adoption program. Police K9s don’t easily forget their training. For instance, there may be certain words, actions, or activities that you’ll be cautioned not to use in order to avoid putting yourself or your family in a potentially unsafe situation. If you’re given any special instructions, make sure you understand and abide by them at all times.

It’s not possible to “untrain” a police dog once certain commands and procedures have become ingrained in its memory.
